    We accept all forms of writing for this contest, including essay, fiction, humor and poetry. Please follow our normal submission guidelines for entries, and look at our last year’s finalists for an idea of what we are looking for. The only rule is that this is a Halloween contest so your piece(s) should reflect that in whatever way you deem Halloween-ish.

  2. Glamour Magazine is currently hosting an essay contest. The theme: “Every woman has a moment in life that changes everything. What’s that moment for you?” Essays should be no more than 3,500 words. The deadline is November 1st. Learn more here.  THRU UNBELIEVABLE WILL SUBBED SOME SHITE. It really WAS shite, not even appropriate word count, not even about the essay subject, but a classic FOR THE PRINCIPLE OF THE THING thing. And you know what, it felt  GOOD. I was in the midst of moving and had a reject 1/2 written thing and I waited till literally 20 minutes b4 deadline to sub but was like 'what the hell we have to show up like we said' and i fucking did! Go fucking ME, man.
  3. Writers & Illustrators of the Future has a regular writing contest with prizes of $1,00, $750 and, $500, plus an annual grand prize of $5,000. They accept submissions of science fiction, fantasy, and dark fantasy. The word limit is 17,000 words. It is not open to professionally published writers. Learn more here.
  4. The Amy Lowell Traveling Poet Scholarship offers $54,000 to the winning writer. Upon acceptance of the prize, the writer is required to travel outside the United States for the entire year. The entry deadline is October 15th. Learn morehere. (bc why the fuck not)
  5. New York Encounter is sponsoring a poetry contest on the theme “Reality as Never Betrayed Me.”  The theme is inspired by Pope Benedict’s claim that “the intelligence of faith has to become the intelligence of reality.” The prizes are $300, $200, and $100. The deadline is November 1st, 2016. Learn more here. Somehow got 4 sonnets subbed to this thing under the wire too. WHOA.
  6. Drake University is hosting a $500 essay contest on the topic of “change and changes.” Essays are limited to 3,500 words. The winner will be brought to Drake University to read from the winning essay. Learn more here. NOV 21 MIDNITE DUE (so... 11:59p on Nov 20th or 21st???)
  7. The James Hurst Fiction Prize is open to residents of North Carolina. They offer a $500 prize for a max 5,000 word short story, and a $250 prize for a max 1,200 word short story.  The deadline is October 11th. Learn more here.
  8. The Binge Watching Cure, by Dec 31, a forthcoming anthology to be published in 2017, is currently seeking submissions of short stories. They pay $200 for short stories under 5,000 words, and $500 for stories that are longer. http://bingewatchingcure.com/submissions/

Mountain West Writers’ Contest NOV 18 Western Humanities Review invites writers currently living in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, or Wyoming to submit to our 2016 contest. Prizes will be awarded in poetry and prose. Winners will receive cash awards of $500 and publication in the Winter 2017 issue of Western Humanities Review. All entrants will receive one copy of the prize issue.

Here are the CATEGORIES you may enter:

  1. An unpublished SHORT STORY of no more than 20 double-spaced pages; limit 5000 words. The James Hurst Fiction Prize for the winning story is $500. There will also be some Honorable Mention awards.
  2. A unpublished SHORT-SHORT FICTION story of no more than 5 double-spaced typed pages; limit 1200 words. Top prize $250.
You may enter one story in each of the two categories.

Here are the RULES:

  1. The contest is open to all North Carolina residents except 
    1. tenured/tenure-track professors in the University of North Carolina system; 
    2. writers with a published book;
    3. previous winners.
  2. Your entry may not have been published in either printed form or online.
  3. All entries must be double-spaced and typed
  4. Include a word count on the first page. 
  5. Do NOT put your name on the story, so it may be judged anonymously. Put your name, email address and phone number on a separate cover sheet.
  6. Previous finalists should submit new work.
  7. No email submissions acceptedDue to volume, we cannot contact each contestant or return stories afterwards.

DEADLINE OCTOBER 11th, 2016
